Pinhole Photography and My Process
Assignment 1 was a new experience for me. Having never did any sort of analog photography before I was excited and also nervous to step into the space and make my own pinhole camera.
My Cameras were built out of a coffee storage container and a cookie tin.
Many of my first exposure came up completely white, I couldn't figure out the timing for a good exposure with my cameras but eventually I got an amazing exposure
Conditions - Overcast
Time 3:45pm
Exposure - 7min
With this exposure I got really excited. The crisp lines are beautiful, the negative also looks incredible.
Next was to start thinking about my assignment and I attempted my self portrait
SelfConditions - Sunny
Time 2:30 pm
Exposure - 30sec
I really try to stray away from basic portraits in any of my photos. however, the limitations of a pinhole camera made it challenging to get a unique pose and it turned out very well.
I then moved on to my exposure over time.
Fading
Conditions - Sunny
Time 3:15pm
Exposure - 45sec
This self portrait was accomplished by switching expressions every few seconds. I find it incredibly striking visually as the ethereal feeling of my portrait directly contrasts the sharp lines in the background. As if I or the memory of me is fading out of existence.
Looking Back
Conditions - Artificial Light, Sun through window
Time 2:15pm
Exposure - 5 minutes
This is my personal favorite. The exposure captures the perfect atmosphere creating a more otherworldly feeling in an otherwise familiar space
I then moved on to the more conceptual portion "where My Eye Can Not go"
Conditions - Sunny
Time 1:45pm
Exposure - 10sec
This photo contains the 360 degree view in one space. Warping and distorting the landscape around me as well as myself. This is where my eye cannot go, my eye cannot see the beauty of an entire 360 degree view. I find it entrancing to try and wrap my mind around this concept.
Conditions - overcast
Time 4:15pm
Exposure - 30sec
This piece is amazing to me. It captures three different perspectives at the same time overlapping each other of the same moment in time. Rather than exposing the paper 3 separate times I used a pinhole camera that had 3 apertures allowing me to capture a panoramic triple exposure of the exact same moment in time. My eye can't look in three directions at once. Can yours?
